 "Stretching is a form of physical exercise in which a specific skeletal muscle
 (or muscle group) is deliberately elongated to its fullest length
 (often by abduction from the torso) in order to improve the muscle's felt
 elasticity and reaffirm comfortable muscle tone. The result is a feeling of
 increased muscle control, flexibility and range of motion. Stretching is also
 used therapeutically to alleviate cramps" (Wikipedia)

 To make a long story short, stretching is done to keep your body flexible and
 your bloodstream clean. It helps to keep your body in good condition
 and it helps to reduce the risk of injuries.

 It's a good thing to stretch before and after a workout. If you're feeling a bit tired
 stretching may also help you to get more energy during the day. As a result of
 the fact that it will let your bloodstream go everywhere into your body.
